This summer, ACT had the privilege of hosting our first Summer Construction Camp, and what an incredible experience it was! Thanks to a grant and support from the Central Florida Association of Builders and Contractors (ABC), high school students from across Orange County came together to immerse themselves in the exciting world of construction.
Just like in the field, safety is the top priority, and our students began camp by receiving OSHA 10 instruction, thanks to our friends at Amphibious. After the second day, our campers earned their OSHA 10 Certifications!
Thanks to the group that came out from Milwaukee, we then had an opportunity to discover some amazing tools. Our students learned about the advancements and quality of Milwaukee Tools and had an opportunity to try them out firsthand. After the demonstration, students broke up and began working on their team projects. They worked together to read blueprints and started framing some scaled-down wall sections.
As the teams worked on their projects, we were visited by other amazing professionals from the industry. ACT's former Chairperson, Vanessa Medina - Tri-City Electric, came to speak to the students on her past experience as an ACT student and her career path after she graduated. The students were also thrilled to learn about her past project as well as her new "EPIC" one! The following day, the students were able to build "Power Man," an electrical hands-on project where students wired outlets and lights.
Our fourth day was filled with more exciting experiences. We were joined by KENPT who led the students in a fabrication competition, Hubbard Construction who brought a simulator for the students to show off their driving skills, and MAF who helped students create concreate structures.
On our last day, we were honored to be hosted by our friends at FINFROCK. Our campers were given a tour of their expansive facility and learned about the FINFROCK culture. The students were impressed with how technology and innovation play a critical role in the construction industry.
The students returned from the field trip and worked to complete their group project. Since this was Summer Construction Camp, we wanted to ensure we had fun. So, the final project was to take all the elements they had been working on throughout the week and turn them into a mini-golf hole. The students were enthusiastic about the challenge, and their pride in their work was evident as they completed their projects.
The camp was a great success, but it would not have been possible without the support from ABC Central Florida and all of our partners who volunteered their time to come out and interact with the students. We would also like to thank, S.I. Goldman, White Cap and Brasfield & Gorrie.
When camp ended, many of the students were inquiring when the next camp would be held. We are excited about expanding our offerings in the future. If you are interested in helping continue camps like this please email contact@actcareers.com.
